Key Listing Decisions

Below are key listing decisions that, as a seller, you must make that can directly affect the selling outcome:

* In what category should I list my item?
* On what day should my auction close?
* At what time should my auction close?
* How can I list when my competition is the lowest?
* At what price should I set my reserve or Buy it now (BIN)?
* What should I include in the title of the listing?

This workshop will show you how eBay Marketplace Research can help you to answer the above questions for your specific selling niche. The trick is really to find market imbalances and exploit those to gain better sell-through rates and higher selling prices.

eBay Marketplace Research 101

Before we jump right into answer listing tactics, let’s quickly go through the basics of what eBay Marketplace Research is and how it generally works.

eBay Marketplace Research is a tool that simply allows you to search up to 90 days of past eBay listings. Searches are done just as they are on the eBay marketplace using keyword, category, and also more advanced filters. The only difference is that you must specify how far back in time you would like to search (i.e. 2 weeks, 1, 2, or 3months, etc.)

Sellers will typically search for a product that he/she sells or plans to sell. The tool then displays not only each individual completed listing, however also provides additional information such as:

* Quantities of the product which were available
* The number of products that successfully sold
* The eBay market value of the product (average price)
* Conversion rate (or sell-through rate)
* Charts displaying trends in supply, price or sell-through rates

Sellers appreciate this visibility into how products comparable to their inventory are bought and sold on eBay. This helps them to gauge the market conditions and make educated selling decisions.

What is the best category?

When listing on eBay, choosing the category in which to list your item may not always be so straight forward. Some types of products can fit into a number of relevant categories. This poses the question to the seller:

In what category should I list my item? Will my product sell better in one category than in another?

The answer is not always cut and dry, however if one category IS better than another, eBay Marketplace Research can tell you.

Let’s assume I have 10 “Polar s625x” watches that include a heart rate monitor in stock. Should I list them under Exercise and Fitness, Sporting Goods, Jewelry, Running, or Biking? If I perform a keyword search on “Polar s625x” the Marketplace Research tool tells me the categories in which the products were regularly listed, and in what quantities:

Categories

By clicking on the most common category “Sporting Goods,” I can see that they sell for an average price of $242 (Ave. Sold Price), and of the 76 available (Completed Items) during the last two weeks, about 52 of them successfully sold (Sold Items). That is a 68% conversion rate (52/76=68%)

Category Metrics

Now if I click on the Running category link, I can see that there were only 10 listed, however all ten sold, and at a higher price of $260. That is also a 100% conversion rate (10/10=100%) which tells me that that category performs extremely well.

Category Metrics2

It looks like runners like to pay more! Therefore this is the category where the watches should be listed.

On what day should I list?

A common question from sellers is “When should I list my item?” Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer. The success of your listing ending on a particular day can vary based on many factors including the type of product you sell and the current number of competing listings. In some cases, listing on a particular day doesn’t make a significant difference. However, Marketplace Research can help you to identify when listing on a particular day can offer a selling advantage.

In short, to determine the best day, you will want to look at the conversion rates (or sell through rate) for each day of the week. Then list to have your items close on the day with the best rate.

Step 1 Use Marketplace Research to search for your product.

Step 2 Set the “Time Period” of the search to 2 weeks. This will break down the chart into days, displaying the activity on each day for the last two weeks. For example, you’ll be able to see the sales activity for the last two Wednesdays.

best Day

Step 3 Calculate the Conversion rate for each day. Calculating the conversion rate per day is done as follows:

Number of Items Sold / Number of Completed Items = Conversion Rate

These totals are displayed by moving your cursor over the different days within the chart.

Step 4 Pick the day with the best conversion rate.

That day is likely one that will yield good sales results. In the example below, Wednesday performed the best, having the highest conversion rate during the last two weeks.

What Time of Day is Best to List?

You won’t like this answer, however we don’t recommend using Marketplace Research to estimate the best time of day to list. Why?

Most types of products just do not have enough volume running across the eBay Marketplace to credibly assess the sales performance of every hour of every day.

Often the best time to list is most accurately determined by an experienced seller through “feel.” If you sell golf clubs, don’t list your items to close Saturday morning. Your customers are out golfing!

Listing when Competing Supply is Lowest

The best time to list your item is when your competitors have not flooded eBay with greater than normal volumes of competing products. The fewer products that are available on eBay that are similar to yours, the better it is for you. This increases both the likelihood that your item will sell, and also should yield a higher selling price.

Therefore, before listing or when determining which products from your pool of inventory you should list on eBay, perform a quick check to gauge the level of the competition.

This is simply done by checking whether the quantity of competing items available on eBay now, is more or less normal. To do this, follow these steps.

Step 1 Use Marketplace Research to search over the last one month of listings to find the total number of completed items.

Completed Items

Step 2 Divide this number by 30 to find how many items are typically available in a given day (Average number of competing listings per day).

Step 3 Perform the same search for the active items on eBay.

Active Items

Step 4 Divide the total number of active items by 7 (because items are typically listed for 7 days) and this will tell you how many competing products right now are set to close each day. (or you can count how many listings are set to expire seven days from now using the “View all Auction and Fixed Price Listings” link).

Step 5 List now or hold off for a while.
If the number of competing items typically available (Step 2) is significantly greater than the number of active daily competing items (Step 4), you may want to wait to list. If it is about equal to or lower, then the supply on eBay is relatively balanced or skewed in your favor.

At what price should I set my Reserve or Buy It Now?

For fixed price items, Buy It Now, listing an item at the Average Selling Price should result in a listing with the conversion rate displayed.

If you want to maximize your revenues, you may set a price above the Average Selling Price. This may result in successful sales, however your resulting conversion rate will likely decrease, and you may need to re-list the item.

If speed of sales if more critical to you and you want to unload your inventory more quickly, you can list below the Average Selling Prices and expect to obtain a higher conversion rate.

How can I build the most effective listing title?

When building a title for your listing, you should keep in mind that the title typically dictates how buyers find your item.

When buyers look for products on eBay, many begin with a keyword search. The default search on eBay only searches within the title of an item and will not return items that include the search terms in the description.

In order for a buyer to bid on your item, the first step is getting the item to show up in the buyer’s search results.

This is where eBay Marketplace Research can help…

How to include the best keywords in your title?

Knowing the specific keywords that buyers are using most often to search allows you to including those words in your title, and increases the visibility of your listings.

The Top Searches module of eBay Marketplace Research tells you which words are most popular. It displays the top 20 most popular keyword searches performed by buyers for any category or product.

When building your listing title, search for the name of your item at various category levels. See if you can identify additional keywords that buyers commonly use and add these terms to your title.

Top Searches

For example, if you were selling a Czech crystal vase, searching for “czech crystal” in Top Searches would reveal that buyers also search for the keyword “bohemian.” By adding the word “bohemian” to the listing title, you’re likely to get more visitors and bids.
