Today’s Workshop Agenda

The workshop today will cover three general topics:

1) How the tool works

We will first walk you through how the eBay Marketplace Research tool can help you to sort through millions of completed listings on eBay to generate statistics on only those products that you are of relevant to your business.

2) Basing sourcing decisions on research

The tool will not tell you what to sell. However, it can help you assess sales potential of products on eBay.

We will answer questions such as:
* What inventory should I buy?
* On what products should I focus my selling efforts?
* How many can I expect to sell, and therefore how much should I stock?

3) Formulate a listing strategy on proven techniques

Research can point to the listings formats, categories, and other characteristics that have proven to work the best, so you can employ those same techniques when listing your products. Of course you want to maximize your selling prices and sales conversion rates.

We will answer questions such as:
* In which eBay listings format should I list?
* Is listing in one category better than another?
* What keywords should I include in my listing title?

Whether you are a seasoned seller or are just getting starting, your participation, questions and comments are encouraged.

Now, let’s dive right in…

What can I expect eBay Marketplace Research to tell me?

It is important to understand that eBay Marketplace Research is a research tool.

It is not a magic bullet that does the research for you, but you can use it to find key insights about how a specific product is selling on eBay. This information is often critical in making informed selling decisions. eBay Marketplace Research provides:

1) More history of listings than is available through the Completed Items search.

2) Calculated totals and averages of product metrics such as:
a. Average prices
b. The number of products typically available
c. The total number sold for a given time period
d. Sales performance in Auctions vs. Stores (Buy it now)
e. Typical shipping rates

3) Top Searches – Information about popular keyword searches

In short, the research tool can you provide you with transparency and insight into how specific products are bought and sold on eBay.

How does Marketplace Research work?

Marketplace Research simply allows you to search for items on eBay that are exactly like (or comparable) to the items that you want to sell. However instead of search for active listings, the tool allows you to search historical completed listings from recent months. Why is this valuable? Because…

Knowing how a product has sold in the past, can help you:
* Estimate how the item will sell in the future
* List the item in a way that has proven to work

Searches are performed similar to Advanced Searches on eBay using:

* Keyword Searches (of listing titles)
* Category
* Advanced Filters (price range, exclude words, etc,)

Let’s see an example from the Motors - Parts & Accessories category…

Researching Motorcycle Helmets

Supposed you are considering selling Shoei Motorcycle helmets as part of your eBay business. Before stocking up on a fresh supply of helmet inventory, you want to investigate the products selling potential on eBay - and perhaps compare Shoei to some other helmet brands.

Using eBay Marketplace Research, you would begin researching Shoei helmets by searching in the following manner:

1) Search by keyword

Shoei Keyword Search

Simply enter “Shoei” or “Shoei helmet” in to the keyword box and click “Run Research.”

2) Drill into the specific category.

Category Drill Down

Drill into the eBay Motors category and then further into categories within Motors – Parts and Accessories. You typically want to drill down to the most specific category and enter the Item Specifics if presented.

The category specified above is:
“All Categories > eBay Motors > Parts & Accessories > Apparel & Merchandise > Motorcycle > Helmets”

3) Apply any filters if needed

Advanced Filters

The goal in your Research query should be to only return results that are for the product of interest. That way, when the tool generates metrics, such as “Average Price”, the calculation is based only on like items.

In our case, we are only interested in the helmets themselves, not things like helmet liners and visors. Therefore you can apply any filters so that the search only finds results that are Shoei helmets. For example, to remove accessories you can exclude keywords such as “liner,” or “visor.”

Applying the price range filter can also be effective. You know that Shoei Helmets are definitely not going to sell for less than $200, or more than $700. Setting the price range filter removes the noise of low-priced accessories and high-dollar “lots” of helmets.

At what price can I expect my item to sell?

Now that we have set the search criteria and have run the search, let’s take a look at what information you can learn about how Shoei helmets are selling:

Average Sold Price Shoei Metrics

Average Sold Price

This is the price at which the product typically sells and is what you can expect to sell the product for. Here we learn that the average price is $296.90 in Auctions, and $355.56 in Stores. We will discuss the reason for this difference later in the workshop.

How likely is it that my items will sell?

Shoei Auction Coversion

The metric “Completed items” represents the number that was available over the last month on eBay. You can see that in auctions, there were 888. You can also see that the number of “Sold Items” was 164. Therefore it looks like approximately 1 out of every 5 Shuffles listed on eBay sell. (164 sold / 888 available or approximately 20%)

1/5 or 20% is also referred to as the conversion rate or sell-through rate.

How many can I expect to sell, and therefore how much should I stock?

Looking at the Sold Items metric shows that 164 Shoei helmets sold on eBay in the last two weeks. At and average price of $296.90, that is $48,691 in sales!

You can expect demand to remain constant, so it is really a question of how much of that market share do you think you can capture? The research tells you that if you are equal to the other competing sellers, with a 20% conversion rate, approximately 1 in 5 of your listings will sell.

If this Shoei helmet sales looks too competitive, you might want to check out the other popular brands such as Aria, HJC or Icon and see what stats they produce.

If you think Shoei presents a selling opportunity for you, now take a look at how you can list to maximize your helmet sales…

Picking Auctions vs. Buy It Now vs. Stores Format

Look back at the Average Price screenshot above. Regarding pricing, you can see the following:

* Average Sold Price (Auctions) = $296.90
* Ave. Sold Buy It Now Price = $319.49
* Average Sold Price (Stores) = $355.56

Although, these are the same products, you can see that they are selling for very different prices on eBay. Here are some general rules for selecting an ebay listing format in which to sell:

Auctions – Listing in the auction format (without Buy It Now) typically results in the highest sell-through rates. This means that you can unload or sell your items quickly, however the selling price can often be less. Buyers typically perceive auctions as a way to potentially get a good deal, and will bid accordingly - typically below retail (although not always).

Buy It Now – Listing with this option provides buyers with the ability to instantly purchase an item. Buyers perceive this more like buying from an online store, and therefore are typically willing to pay closer to or retail prices. They also know that if the seller is willing to part with the item at that fixed price, it is likely not a “steal,” such as they might be able to get through an auction. Note: because of this perception, Buy It Now listings can increase the likelihood that your item will not sell at all.

Buy It Now (Fixed price items within Stores) – Listing in this format can often yield higher prices, however it typically takes longer for items to sell. Buyers often have relationships with their favorite sellers, have established trust, and are willing to pay more through a Store.

Keep the above rules and your selling objective in mind when choosing a listing format.

Picking a Category

For some products, multiple eBay categories seem to fit, presenting you with the choice - Will listing in one category produce a better sales result than the other?

To answer this question, look to the research. Once you have your research query setup for your product, using keywords and filters, drill into one category option and take a look at the metrics. Perform the same type of evaluation that we did for Shoei helmets (earlier in this workshop). Is the Average Sold Price higher in one category than the other? Is the sell-through rate (Sold Items/Completed Items) higher in one vs. the other.

Often times, looking at these metrics can answer the question for you.

Building your listing title?

When buyers look for products on eBay, many begin with a search. Including the most common search terms in your listing title can drive more buyer traffic to your listings. Searching by product name or by category in the Top Searches module of eBay Marketplace Research can tell you those common search terms. Search the list below and pick out the relevant terms to include in your title.

Shoei Top searches

Including common misspellings can also be an effective technique:
