The Surprising Truth about Title Word Misspellings and Typos - Jan 08

Jan 8, 2007 10:43 AM
Misspellings generating higher sales is not entirely surprising. As much as we fight with compound words, plurals (since we can't predict which plurals eBay will include automatically), special characters, and common misspellings.

We've got an advantage in this area since I'm naturally a poor speeler... but it's still a toss up whether we say "tumbler" or "tumblers", "dish" or "dishes", "knife" or "knives" etc etc etc when title space is tight.

We also have challenges with brand names... especially lengthy ones.

No more questions really... makes sense (sence, cents)...

@kellytom:

You wrote: A possible reason misspellings work so well: "Clever" buyers enter misspelled words deliberately, in hopes of finding a hidden bargain. When they bid on a misspelled title, they get excited because they assume they are bidding against fewer/less motivated bidders, and that the range is under market. They're "self-motivated," and so will keep bidding until they win that (perceived) bargain."

I think you're right on the buyer's assumptions. Buyers seem to be intentionally entering misspellings to get bargains. The important thing to keep in mind as a seller is to do your research beforehand, so you know the best options to maximize your sales results.

Great Workshop. I accidentally stumbled upon similar knowledge in trying to buy Vintage Fiestaware. Several sellers apparently do not research actual color names. I was able to purchase valuable Fiesta when the seller listed a piece as off white instead of Ivory the official name for the color. It worked for purple and violet instead of Lilac the official color. It worked for blue instead of Saffire and Cobalt There was less competition for the incorrect color names. Great for me the buyer...why does this happen?...because the seller didn't research Fiesta and find out...no beige, off white, no purple or blue. I wrote a guide for buying Fiesta with this information and included it in my auctions. Lots of folks have thanked me for the information and have happily capitalized on these errors.

I love your comment! It really does make sense (sence, cents)...

Sometimes I wish we could hear what you all are saying!

Anyway, there are a lot of considerations when crafting a title. Brand name, plural vs. non-plural, etc. Research certainly makes it easier to figure it out in a more reasonable time-frame.

Thanks for keeping it light!

Hi Everyone:

Question. Do you have any titles that would require a symbol like an appostrophe? Give us some more real-life examples!

Hi, Thanks for the lessons. Can you reason why two identical items, listed days apart, sell very differently? For example, if I list 'computer mouse' and post on a Monday, and it sells for $10.00 and then I list the same item a week later and it only sells for $5.00. Is there a reason for that? What are your ideas?

The Surprising Truth about Title Word Misspellings and Typos - Jan 08

Jan 8, 2007 10:54 AM
Hi,
Interesting posts so far!

I'm wondering what part singular and plural actually
plays in a title, and how the eBay search handles it.
For example, ebook or ebooks--I seem to remember
reading somewhere on eBay's search help pages that
searching for a singlular will also pull up results
for the plural, is that correct?

And with the new
search format testing, which so many users seem to
hate, there has been mention many times of searches
not being consistent, that they sometimes leave out
current listings--if that's true, wouldn't research
software be somewhat unreliable?

Thanks, and
Be well and happy,
Marty

Hi there,

Thanks for this discussion. Am I allowed to ask how much your software costs? With the recent eBay listing fee increases combined with Canada Post rate hikes - selling is becoming increasingly expensive.

Thanks

Harmony Kingdom Cardew Teapot Crackin' Brew OR Crackin Brew -- even Cracking Brew and Cracklin Brew.....

This is a real-life example taken from a listing i did for 1 of my eBay Store clients. He had 10 of these teapots, so i was able to keep an eye out for all of the various variations over several months!

Hi star-light:

Thanks your question. You asked: "Can you reason why two identical items, listed days apart, sell very differently? For example, if I list 'computer mouse' and post on a Monday, and it sells for $10.00 and then I list the same item a week later and it only sells for $5.00. Is there a reason for that? Wow, really great question. Are you listing them on the same day of the week? Is the duration exactly the same? If so, I would wonder what external factors are contributing to the change. Was some electronics store having a major sale? Has a holiday just passed?

Thanks,
