Welcome to our workshop, “Use Research to Increase your Motors, “Parts & Accessories” Sales” The Terapeak marketing team, Sara Taheri and Morgan Brooks, and Dave Frey are here to answer any questions you may have. Using Research

Before we begin we would like to give you an overview of how market reserach works. Here is a simple run-down of the researching process:

1. You have an item to sell on eBay, for example: "BMW Headlight"

2. Research those items –



3. Get Information -



4. Use information to create a selling strategy and improve listing success:

a. Average sold price for “BMW Headlight” = $122.97
b. 2,637 listings on eBay in the last 30 days
c. 14.49% success rate
d. Wednesday is best day to sell
e. 7 day listings are most successful
f. 9-10pm sees the most activity...etc

Best Time of Day

An important part of selling on eBay is ending your auction at the right time of day. Every item is unique and each will have different demand throughout the day.



For example above is a search we performed for “Honda Wheels”. The graph shows the number of total listings vs. the number of successful listings for each hour of the day. Demand for this item seems to be very strong between 7-8 pm.

Best Time of Week to List

Choosing the best day of the week is also very important. If you look at this example of “BMW Alternator” you can see that demand fluctuates throughout the week. As you can see Wednesday has the highest Sell-Through Rate.



It definitely pays to do some research to find the best time of the week to end your auction, that way you know when you will have the greatest success for your particular item. Research allows you to track buyer behavior and plan your sales accordingly



Learning Objective


Timing is everything and with Market Research you can pick the best day of the week and hour of day to end your auction. Don’t just guess a time, do the research and come out on top!

Researching other Sellers

Have you ever wondered how some sellers do so well on eBay? If so, then using seller research may interest you.

With our research tool, you can research any eBay seller and know what, where, when and how they are selling. This gives you an inside look into the eBay selling process.

If for example if you wanted to sell Hub Cap’s, you could get reports on eBay’s top 5 Hub Cap sellers. These reports would show you;

  • Their Total Sales
  • Their Selling Times
  • Their Overall Success Rate
  • The Listing Types, Promotions, and Durations used…etc


If I wanted to sell a variety of items, I could get reports on eBay’s top 5 Parts & Accessories sellers. These reports would show me what the most successful sellers are doing to make such high sales.

Researching what Products to Sell


Research can also be used to consider what products you should sell on eBay. Rather than randomly choosing what to sell, you can research products and truly evaluate their profit potential.

If for example you were unsure whether you should invest in:


  • ATV Parts
  • Motorcycle Parts
  • Boat Parts


A quick Terapeak search on each category gives you a snapshot of their sales for the last 30 days:

From this research you can see that:

Motorcycle Parts

  • Had the highest sales
  • Had the most listings (largest market)
  • Had the highest amount of Bids

Boat Parts

  • Had the highest sell-through rate,
  • Had the least amount of listings (smallest market)
  • Had the highest amount of items offered

ATV Parts

  • Had the lowest success rate
  • Had lowest amount of bids
  • Offered the lowest amount of items

As you can see the research information given to you can be very informative and useful for analyzing products.

If you used Sell-through Rate to decide what to sell, then Boat Parts would be your choice. You could then research Boat Parts in more detail and find out what kind of Boat Parts you should sell.



The highest amount of listings is found within “Accessories & Gear”, but the highest sell-through rate and average selling price is associated with “Motors/Engines & Components”.

Within “Motors/Engines & Components” you can also see what type of motor is the most successful. It appears that “Outboard Motors” have a high sell-through rate and the highest selling price.

You could also see what type of “Outboard Motors” is most successful as well. It seems like “Under 10 hp” is the most popular and has the highest success rate.
