Using Research

Before we begin we would like to give you an overview of how market reserach works. Here is a simple run-down of the researching process:

1. You have an item to sell on eBay (example: iPod Nano)

2. You go on the internet

3. You Research your item

4. You get valuable information

*this is a small sample of the information given*

5. Use the information to create a selling strategy and improve listing success:

  • Average sold price for “iPod Nano: $122.99
  • 24,344 listings on eBay in the last 30 days
  • 76.88% success rate
  • Thursday is best day to sell
  • 1 day listings are most successful…etc
  • Bold is used most often in successful auctions

Researching to $pot products that will $ell at Christmas

Being ready for the busy holiday season can be challenging. Thankfully, tools exist that you can use to be more prepared. For example in Terapeak research you can find out:

- What items are going to be Hot sellers at Christmas

Although we are not psychic we can show you the current trends for your items (whether sales are increasing or decreasing), that way you can see if they are going to be top performers when it comes closer to the Christmas.

A well known Christmas phenomenon was “Tickle me Elmo”. It has been 10 years since they were going for over $1000/toy. Since then, they have released all kinds of Elmo’s, in hopes of another phenomenon. There has been Rock ‘N Roll Elmo, Country Elmo, Chicken Dance Elmo…etc. They released one each Christmas in hopes of another phenomenon. This year is Elmo’s 10th anniversary and to celebrate they are releasing a revolutionary new tickle me Elmo called “T.M.X”.

How would you know to stock up on these Elmo’s?

With Terapeak you can watch the sales of this new toy directly after its release and see whether it’s going to be a phenomenon or not.

Within 7 days of its release, the new Tickle Me Elmo had sales of $3,304,073 and 379,914 Bids!

The graph above is showing the total sales (top) and average selling price (bottom) for Elmo in the past 2 years. This information can be helpful with planning your selling. You can see that over the past two years Christmas sales for Elmo’s on eBay have been extremely minimal…until September 2006, where they shoot through the roof! You can also see that 3 weeks after they were released sales fell by 60%, but are now starting to rise again. You can also see that average price is staying high and actually increasing.

Other holiday releases include new gaming consoles from Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo's Wii will make its debut November 19, and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 hit stores today. With such similar release dates, it will be interesting to see which toy comes out on top.

As you can see in this graph for Nintendo Wii, total sold listings on eBay have been slowly increasing, leading up to its release date. Bids/listing have also been increasing at a steady rate, which is always a good sign.

Playstation 3 has had more sold listings on eBay, although they have had much lower bids/listing.

As you can see these graphs give you an indication of how well each item will perform over christmas, helping you decide which one you should stock up on.

Learning Objective

You can use Terapeak to plan your holiday selling. Tracking the success rate of products can help you plan what items you should invest in.

Knowing the best brand/color to sell

Terapeak can also be used to make purchasing decisions like what Brand, color or size to stock up on. The research we provide can answer questions like:

1. Cindy: “I want to sell hair dryers, but I don’t know which brand to stock up on!”

2. Tom: “I want to sell iPod’s but I don’t know if I should sell White or Black?

To demonstrate the usefulness of Terapeak, I will use it to answer the questions above.

Question #1

“I want to sell Mascara on ebay, but I don’t know which brand to sell?”

In Terapeak you can research the popularity of specific brands, and see which has the highest sales. You can also see other things like;

- Total Bids, Bids/Listing
- Success rate
- Average Selling Price…etc

The above graph is comparing Total Sales (top) and Total Bids (Bottom) for the 5 top selling mascara brands. We can see that “Lancôme” outperforms its competition by a large amount; this should help Cindy choose a mascara to sell on eBay.

Question #2

“I want to sell iPod’s but I don’t know if I should sell White or Black?”

In the graph above you can see that Black outperforms White by 55% at Christmas and on average has 10% higher sales the rest of the year.

This information will help Tom choose which color iPod he should stock up on at Christmas, to insure he has enough supply to meet demand.

Learning Objective

You can use Market Research to make more informed inventory decisions. If Tom and Cindy did not research their items before selling, they would not have known the vast differences that exist between Brand Name and Color.

Knowing the best time to list to get the highest profits

To insure that you make the most out of this busy holiday season it’s important to know when to list your items. Listing at the right time can make all the difference when it comes to making high profits at Christmas.

Above is a graph for “Power Wheels, Motorized Cars”. As you can see sales at Christmas reach their maximum in the week of Dec 9th – Dec 17th. After that sales decline very rapidly, and finally hit rock bottom 2 weeks later.

Slide #11

If you look at the graph closer you can see the exact week that you should start listing. Sales begin to rise in the week of October 23rd – October 29th (the end of Halloween). If you were going to sell “Power Wheels, Motorized Cars” then you should start listing right after Halloween and try to have your Christmas inventory sold by at least the 3rd week of December.

Learning Objective

Market Research can help you plan the perfect time to list your items on eBay. Listing at the right time can make all the difference and increase your sales and sell-through rate, helping you take advantage of the busy holiday season.
