Re: Help I.D. King like figure on antique bronze nut cracker

The color doesn't look like any shade of bronze I've seen. There are hints of grey showing thru. I think it may be another metal plated or painted, perhaps spelter or cast iron. See if a magnet sticks to it.

I collect fine cannon models (patent, arsenal, salesman, maker's, presentation), mug-type brass/copper gunpowder measures, artillery sights/quadrants/shot gauges, cannon firing flintlocks, percussion locks, early artillery books, manuscripts, artillery projectiles, original cannon barrels, etc.

Maybe the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes" ... since he is wearing none? One problem with my theory is that he is sitting instead of standing (I think he was appearing before his subjects when he found out he didn't have any clothes on).

I'm guessing just sort of a 'generic' deity figure (vs. royalty) not necessarily a specific historical or literary figure. Maybe some Art Nouveau influence in the design? I don't think it's bronze but maybe brass plated or 'painted' iron?

Could be King Neptune-the base of it looks like it has waves in the design.

Since the design in the 'cracker' bowl is that of an Ukrainian egg my guess is that this is a deity or mythological character from that area. No time to research that now-perhaps someone could look it up.

no, other way around, Ukrainian eggs were patterned after this thing.

Why do you think the figure is that of a king?

It seems unlikely it would be Neptune without his iconic Trident.

Yes, or an Eastern European Santa Claus. Don't get the nudity, though.

Lean more toward gnome.

Thanks for the credit but Spring caught the Neptune image first and I just agreed.
