Bidding against yourself does not drive the bid up except you have to beat their proxy bid. If the opening bid was $10 and I bid $50, it would still show $10 with one bid. If you came along and bid less then the $50 you would have gotten a message to bid again. You would then have to bid at least $51 to beat the $50 proxy bid. In the meantime before you bid, I could rase the proxy bid to $100 and it would still show $10 because I was the only bidder.
