Advice on buying Ebay musical instruments/warnings!

I just wanted to toss out a some pointers to those thinking about buying musical instruments online/with Ebay. 1) Check the feedback of the seller. This is important! Look at the negative feedback and try to determine what the problems were with seller/items before bidding. Make sure you're dealing with a seller that accepts criticism without getting hostile. I've noticed lots of sellers who go ballistic when questioned, even to neutral comments. A good, trustworthy seller will not attack anyone who is disappointed or frustrated. Don't deal with these sorts of people (or do so at your own risk). 2) Ask questions before you bid! Email the seller and ask about the item! If you don't get a prompt reply, don't bid! The con artists will ignore your questions! Legit sellers offer real info and are pleasant to deal with usually. Important questions to ask are: Does the item have a serial number? Does the seller have manufacturer information/address and phone number (in case you need parts in the future)? Is there a warranty and what does it cover? How long do you have to be able to return an item if unhappy? If the item does not have a serial number, more than likely it is a VERY CHEAP IMPORT, usually from China, and not many music shops are willing to repair the instrument because there are no parts available! These instruments are also very poorly made and usually break after only minimal usage. Nobody will want to help you fix even minor problems because further damage could be done during repair and they don't want the liability. Be very cautious with this. You may think you're getting a good deal on an inexpensive instrument, but in the long run you'll lose out and have to buy a better quality one soon anyway! 3) Research the product. Lots of notorious sellers claim they have a finely made German or Italian product (or whatever) and in very bold letters advertise the name (such as "We have the BLABLA, folks!" but most of these are fake companies and the names are simply made up and engraved on the no-name instrument. Ask around! Call up a music shop and ask if they've ever heard of the instrument or investigate online with musical organizations and search engines. There are many companies online who sell reputable, well known instruments and they can tell you whether or not they've ever heard of that instrument. Generally, beginner/student models of most musical instruments cost between 300-400 U.S. dollars. You can ask for some well known names of rental instruments and these are what you want to look for online/with Ebay. Avoid anything that you can't get info on. If you do a search on say, Google.com and come up with nothing helpful on your search, chances are..it's a fake instrument. Many musicians have websites and message boards as well. Check them out. Interested in a flute? Look up flutist organizations. There are very large ones online and you can post a message about that particular instrument and ask for comments. You'll get honest info from musicians because many have used several different brands and are familiar with con artists. You can also ask at local high schools. The band teachers are used to dealing with certain instruments. They'll be able to tell you which are good and which are crap. You could have your son/daughter ask if it's appropriate. 4) Lastly, ask yourself some questions. If the item is inexpensive, what's your gut feeling on it? The rule of thumb with instruments is.. you get what you pay for. Fine quality instruments have a hefty price tag. What's it worth to you? Would you be happy with something that will break a year down the road? Will you be able to resell it once you or the student is ready for a more advanced model? Don't rush into anything. These bargain Ebay instruments will be here for a very long time and take a few days' time to find out some answers before you click on the "bid" button. Buying a more well known, used brand is often better than buying an el cheapo questionable one. You can always have an good quality used instrument re-padded, cleaned and repaired for a fairly low cost and you'll have a very good instrument that will last and be a better investment, especially when it comes time for you to re-sell. Hope this helps you!

I also meant to mention...
1. Thanks for your support of the Humane Society
2. Some buyers...like ME, for instance, shy away from buying from sellers who use "private" listings.
EBay already uses the code names for bidders...thats privacy enough.
The "private" sales may be appropriate for "adult," or other sensitive items.
But, it is a tool used by many shills, crooks, and scammers...and raises a red flag of suspision for some of us. JMHO
3. I have TWO Terry C. McInturff Zodiac guitars in my collection, and they are among the very best guitars I have ever played.

Hello JayBird,
I agree that it is possible to buy some great instruments on eBay without ever having played them.
In fact, it is Impossible to find certain instruments UNLESS you buy on eBay without having played them.
For example...not many people would run across a great McInturff guitar, like you have listed, in their local music store, or pawn shop.
And, by the way, not many people will run across the McInturff in your listing...because you have misspelled McInturff...and it is not showing in search. ![]:)](http://b.us-forums.lvwd.net/images/emoticons/devil.gif)

We sell vintage and used guitars, musical instruments & accessories... a different type of guitar buying and selling.
I wouldn't say 'never buy without playing'- like most purchases, that depends on lots of factors. I'll share some recommendations to consider:
Vintage Instruments, including guitars, are rare & it's not always possible I'll have an opportunity to play before buying. In fact unless the instrument is within 300 miles of Charlotte, NC, there's no question I'm depending on my experience, education and curent trends to make that decision.
Imported, less expensive guitars and similar items take more experience with the seller and their good feedback for a buyer in my opinion. When we offer that kind of item, we've evaluated and played it ourselves and have a 3 day return policy.
Used Guitars and parts, again, mean using our personal experience and a usually some type of return policy.
Flipping the equation to the seller, most bidders and buyers show good faith and are great. I wish eBayers had better ways to evaluate the few 'bad egg' buyers and bidders than the feedback system but I see lots of recent improvements
I'm not suggested anything I don't do- I'm a purchaser of instruments online and word of mouth.with a network of trustworthy buyers and sellers worldwide.
So, that's the way we try to do business in Carolina. Jaybird Mebane

There is a lot more going on with that dealer than what you have spotted.
He lists guitars of many brands, every three days, with a reserve so high they never sell.
They are just to get you )with live links) to the eBay store, and then to the WEBSITE of the guy who does the setups...where all the sales are made off-eBay.
Check out all items listed by this guy...then check completed listings by him. How many sold?? How many times are the same guitars listed over and over again.
So...it matters not whether it is an Olympia, or a Tacoma Chief...by the time you reach his reserve...you could buy a Chief from an honest dealer, and goldplate it.

Or the dealer that simply writes "Tacoma Guitar" displaying a photo that looks like the Tacoma Chief, a sought after USA made guitar.
There are no pics that help us determine if it is a Tacoma or Olympia less regarded Asian made or the USA Chief model.
There is a great deal of HYPE about how the guitar was set up and fine tuned by a different entity other than the Tacoma company.
I have sent questions to this dealer that are ignored and not posted to the item auction page.

Welcome to the forum thread that never ends. While we have covered most of the bases, there is a new and alarming trend that is bound to find its way to eBay soon.
I'm talking about the new, cheaper than cheap, lower than low, made-for-the-big-box-store instruments being put out by Fender and Gibson.
It was bad enough when they just slapped names like "Starcaster by Fender" on them. But on a recent trip to Costco, I noticed that Fender has sunk even lower by trashing the good name of their budget "Squire" line.
There are some really fine low-cost Squires out there, but Fender will now create a lot of confusion in the marketplace by putting out a cruddy, unplayable, untunable version of the same guitars under the Squire brand.
It's junk like this that turns kids from enthusiastic beginners into "kids with dusty guitars in the closet."

It sounds like nothing has changed in the last 8 years. Here's my complaint. Most instruments are listed as, "used." E-bay's description of used states that it may have cosmetic wear but is FULLY OPERATIONAL! So all these trumpets with missing valves, euphoniums with stuck pistons and trombones with bent slides should be listed as, "for repair or parts."

I have been buying and selling on eBay for many years now and this is to warn buyers of guitars...make sure that the seller accurately describes the true condition of the guitar before you buy it...and get it in writing. There has been a recent swell of guitar sellers who are falsely describing the true condition of a guitar and then selling it knowing that they have posted false information in their listing. This goes for both NEW guitars and USED guitars. There are big time sellers here on eBay who are selling 2nds and FLOOR DISPLAY MODELS who state that the guitar is MINT and free of defects. And then when you buy it the guitar is all nicked up and the guitar is far from being in the condition described in the actual listing. I would also like to advise that this new Ebay Buyer Protection Program is not what it is chalked up to be. It appears that eBay is out to protect the Seller and NOT the buyer. Use a major credit card for these purchases and then use your credit card company to recover your money if you fall victim to these bad sellers here on eBay.

Thanks, Catmanwillylou. I didn’t click on any links, and did a virus scan anyway. The listing had 15 hours to go when I saw it, so I don’t know if it was a one day listing, because I didn’t check. The last e-mail from the “seller” had a lot of misspellings, and when I saw that she wanted the money sent Western Union, I was soooo disappointed because I knew I wasn’t going to get the harp. She does have my contact information (name, address, phone number, and e-mail address), but that sort of information about people is readily available through the phone book, etc., so I don’t think she could do much with it. And I haven’t heard from her since the listing was pulled.
I read through this entire thread yesterday, and it contains some great information. I can’t get that isis link that shows if an instrument is stolen to work, but did get some valuable information off the thread. EBay already has this thread stickied to the top of the page. It’s too bad they can’t add flashing neon lights and a read this now sign to it, too. --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------

. Falconlady (and everyone else) That is a typical layout for a common SCAM. Don't bid......email......SCAM. BIN that does NOT go through eBay......SCAM. $5,000 item for $1,700.....SCAM. Going through PayPal with a Western Union payment?? LOL....SCAM. The "Buy It Now" page did NOT come through eBay. There should be clues on it that convince you of that. I hope you did NOT click on any LINKS on that page. If you did, change all your passwords, and run spyware and virus scans. Free shipping from England on a large item....Scam. Listing pulled by eBay....SCAM. It was a one day listing, too, wasn't it? That deal had so many red flags, there could not POSSIBLY be any doubt......there was NO harp.....the second you sent your money by Western Union, you would have been SCAMMED. Again...... The SECOND that you see the "Don't bid.....email me first," that's a SCAM.....you don't have to read any further. CM

I had what I believe to be a close call yesterday. I saw a 38 string (large) harp of a make and model that I know to be worth about $5,000.00 on eBay with very few bids, and those bids were really, really low. The seller wanted to be e-mailed before bidding and gave an e-mail address to use on the auction page. She offered to let me do a BIN for $1,700.00 and I was really interested. The seller was registered in California and she wanted to go through paypal so "we're both protected."
I got the BIN page and link. It told me to send money to her in England via Western Union, and assured me that it was safe. I used the ask seller a question link on the auction to be sure that this actually came from her. She said yes, it was from her, and the harp is in England, and she'd send it as soon as I sent the money via Western Union. Paypal was no longer an option. I find it hard to believe that she'd ship me an instrument that large from clear across the ocean for $1700 when it's worth $5000. The original auction is gone, which is a good thing because I was the high bidder, and at this point, I doubt the harp even exists.
I did a google search on eBay and Western Union and it showed that eBay doesn't support the use of Western Union. I got my first harp on eBay, and that seller was great, but I don't think I'll do it again. --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------

Good post, but I agree that the people who need to read it the most probably won't ever think to look. The only reason I did is because I was searching to see if there is anyway to prevent what is a certain scam on a "vintage" guitar from being perpetrated. It seems like the privacy measures that ebay has implemented makes it impossible now to alert bidders to the possibility that they are going to be ripped off. I contacted the seller with my concerns and was told that, even though they claim that it is the genuine article, they are not experts themselves so they're not responsible if it isn't. Can you believe that? In the past, I've benefited from the "schooling" I was given by other, more savvy ebayers.

That's wonderful advice! I've been a clarinetist for 16 years now, and I frequently check ebay to see if there's anything good out there for a decent price. I'm definitely going to ask the next person I consider buying from if some note plays in tune or not. Thank you!

Hi. I'm a piper of some 15 years and I last year bought a Pak. set of pipes from a maker who at that time put his name in his ads. He doesn't any more, although his co. is a big maker of musical instruments. Cost was less than $200 delivered and he was a good person to work with. Appearance and engraving were ok. I chose to keep them. Pak pipes are generally of softer "rosewood" and not blackwood. I sought a set of practice pipes I could use daily in place of my $$$ Inveran pipes. I have yet to get the Pak. drones in tune but I have reworked the pipes, done replacements (Scottish) including chanter and reed, drone reeds, flappervalve, and bag (had 14 tiny holes). The plastic chanter mouthpiece later crumbled while I was playing! Replaced with Scottish polypenco. I tossed the woodchip-filled prac. chanter. It was actually packed with wood chips and I had to use a ramrod to clear it. Some of the black paint used to cover the rosewood stocks washed off when I watertested the airbag. New to piping and want pipes? Get a Dunbar long prac. chanter ($80+-) and put away $50-60 a mo. In a year or so when you're ready to play pipes having taken lessons from a local pipe major, you can afford good second-hand Scottish pipes. bob of rockytopmarli

Hi, I've just found this thread and am hoping to learn how to sell an instrument. A friend is a musician and has never sold on eBay. I sell on eBay, but my specialty is in collectibles and handbags. I don't know anything about instruments so I am hoping to learn as he's asked for my help in selling. Are there pitfalls to look out for? I know with handbags, for example, there are often duplicated serial numbers on Coach bags to avoid buying. What can I do as a seller to watch out for bad bidders? Anyone have experience selling a saxophone on eBay?

Good warnings and advice. I also notice another game dishonest sellers will do. They say the amp or guitar or what ever effects was used by SRV or Hendrix or some other famous person to get peoples attention. And if you do the research you find most of the time the item for sale is not even related to the person. I caught one today about Robert Cray using a Magnatone M.15 suitcase amp. Now Robert Cray used Magnatones but only the 1959 and 1960 models of the 260 and 280. Both are Magnatones best and many other pros used these specific amps because they are easy to maintain. The Magnatone M series dubbed the suitcase amps were notorious for breaking and most amp techs will not even want to repair them because of the spaghetti wiring. A real nightmare to repair. Even when I told the person he was incorrect about his info and even sent him proof for all this he still didn't correct it. Most likely he is selling it because it has problems. That's what a lot of sale are. Nothing but problems. But if your a smart buyer and know your stuff sometime an amp or guitar that doesn't work may be the best deals if you know what really is repairable and will not cost a small fortune to repair. max
