The "Methuen Handbook of Colour" is the best means I know of identifying in English colours and colour groups. It is expensive because very carefully printed using the best inks. HTML colours are computer screen colours and how they are displayed depends on settings in your or your customer's computer.

On an Apple computer you can use System Preferences>Displays>Colors to adjust. It is quite technical. When selling a product from a particular manufacturer it is best to use the colour name that maker uses for that product if you can find it.

I think sellers should try and ensure their photographs give a true impression; use photo editing to remove "colour casts" .

On your item descriptions you should use a light fairly neutral background as strong, positive darks and light backgrounds can distort the appearance of your photos. The grey colour of the boxes on this page is a good backrgound for most things.

Back in the 70's L'eggs Pantyhose came in plastic eggs, I thought maybe that's what you got for your wife. I mean who could resist that packaging, right?

No....not that I recall.   It was years ago and I was recently married. We had to go to a wedding and my wife sent me out to Macy's before we had to leave ( I balked at her request ). I  finally located the panty hose rack (which was huge ! ) and there was so many of them in different sizes and colors and forms that I was dumbfounded !  My head was spinning as I looked around for someone to help me.  This nice lady helped me find what my wife wrote on the paper.  I took the panty hose home and my wife then "ripped " them when putting them on ( she called it a "run" and I didn't know what that was - typical male) and told me to go back to Macy's !!!   I said "No"....."Can't you just sew them ?" ( Men are not too sharp at times ).  PS - I went back to Macy's again and purchased a 2nd pair !!  Whew !  Tough assignments !

but I had to Google that and apparently Stila makes Juliette which is a light pink and Guerlain makes a Juliette that is brownish. Both are currently for sale on eBay.

Janey,

I found them by going to the top of the VCA board page. Right hand side. Find "Advanced Search". Then there is a space where you can put in the poster's eBay ID.

I just entered your ljandherknight. Then hit search, and everything that you posted on,that is archieved, will pop up. Your most recent ed threads are not there though, sorry, just these "oldies but goodies" :-p

The previous one from long ago was much longer, but I don't know if I just printed it or saved it.

This is great though and I'm sure helpful to many.

Did she use "the blue of a deep pool of water in the late afternoon sun"??? That is too funny... most I have heard of, but that is new (and I'm from Florida). I'm all for poetic license, I'd love to be the person who names nail polish colors, but I'd love to see the shade of blue that the other names didn't quite accurately describe.

My grandmother, a German who immigrated to Washington state from Russia before WWI, worked for years as a dressmaker. She knew hundreds of fabric names.....as did her CUSTOMERS, so if she used one of the probably 75 different terms for a specific grade and hand of velvet, her client knew exactly what she was talking about. Ditto on colors; acid green, alice blue, biscuit...thousands of terms, all very precise and everyone knew what you meant. NOT SO TODAY.

And don't forget wikipedia's resource, brought to our attention by ikwewe recently: color charts from wikipedia. Just change last word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Shades_of_brown You just type in the color you're trying to identify there at the end of the URL, and presto! You see a bunch of samples with their names. Really helpful when you're in a hurry. It's not super extensive but still, it covers a good range. MC

Don't worry, it is. When somebody posts to a tacked thread, it seems to float awhile, but it stays tacked.
